Pen and Pencil Frequently Asked Questions

Who can become a member of the P&P, and how?

Anyone can become a member of the P&P. Journalists are considered “active” members ($60 per year) and get to vote for and serve on the club’s governing board. Others can sign up for an “associate” membership ($40 per year). All new members must be sponsored by an active member or a staff member. If you don’t know any journalist members, ask your bartender to sponsor you!

For more information and to request a membership, visit this webpage.

Can I host an event at the P&P?

Anyone can pitch an event and members are encouraged to host or organize events for the community in partnership with the board. Reach out to a board member or email board@penandpencil.org to get started.

For an additional $60 per year, you can upgrade to “sustaining membership” status, which allows you to book one private event at the club each year free of charge, subject to availability. You may choose each year whether you want to have this membership status.

The door is locked. How do I get in?

There is a microphone and camera in the entryway. Just knock or say hello, and a club staff member will come to the door!

If I’m a member, how many guests can I bring?

Any P&P member can bring up to four guests at a time.

Can I come to the P&P if I’m not a member?

Many events at the club are open to everyone regardless of membership status. Check the event information on the calendar on the website to see if this is the case.

How do I stay up to date with the events at the P&P?

Members are kept up to date with club happenings through our email newsletter. Non-members can visit the event calendar.

When can I come to the P&P?

The club is generally open from 6:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 p.m. to 3 a.m Saturday and Sunday.

Is smoking allowed at the P&P?

All journalism events are nonsmoking, and that rule extends for an hour after the event's scheduled end time. In general, this means no smoking before 10 p.m. on nights with events. Otherwise, smoking is allowed. The P&P has a state-of-the-art ventilation system that clears smoke out of the bar at a much faster rate than regular HVAC systems.

Am I allowed to take photos or videos inside the P&P?

No, because this is an “off the record” space. However, you can take photos in the foyer at the entrance, and we encourage you to take a photo with the P&P’s iconic neon sign in the vestibule outside!

Do you have nonalcoholic options?

Yes. We offer soda, Shirley Temples, nonalcoholic cider, and nonalcoholic beer. If you’re in the mood for a mocktail, ask the bartender what they can stir up for you.

What is the Crock-Pot in the corner of the room?

The P&P offers its world-famous crock pot hot dogs free of charge. If you come in craving a dog and the crock pot is not out, just let the bartender know you are hungry, and something can be arranged.

Has Anthony Bourdain been to the P&P?

Yes. Legend (and video) has it that he drank the hot dog water.

Can I drink the hot dog water?

It’s neither allowed nor recommended.

Can I bring my own food to the P&P?

Yes! But only if you don’t like hot dogs.

What is the club’s signature drink?

Ask for the Emeritus.

Does the P&P sell swag?

Yes, the P&P sells t-shirts and pins. Stay tuned for more!

Who do I reach out to with other questions or to provide feedback?
