About this event
On a Philadelphia street in 1992, Shanda McManus’s brother Monir was killed in a drive-by shooting. Three decades later, in her new book Brother Epistles, McManus traces her brother’s life — from teen fatherhood in North Philly to a stint in the U.S. Army and later, the drug trade — and the lasting impact of his death on her family and community. Inquirer reporter Ellie Rushing will speak with McManus about sibling grief, unsolved violence, and the decades-long toll of gun violence on communities of color in Philadelphia — from the devastating spike in homicides during the pandemic to today's dramatic decline — and what that shift might teach us about preventing violence and supporting those left behind.
