About this event

As it has in the past, immigration to America has again become a controversial topic and one of the key issues in this year's Presidential election campaign. One candidate proposes mass deportations and blames immigrants for taking jobs from Americans and causing crime. Meanwhile, the other touts efforts to increase the security of our southern border but avoids demonizing those who cross it.

Despite the arguing, this country remains a beacon for those seeking a better life from all over the world. According to Pew Research Center figures, the 47.8 million foreign-born Americans account for one-fifth of alll the world's international migrants.

Are those migrants crossing our southern border a threat or an opportunity? What roles do immigrants play in our society? Do they contribute to social disorder, or do they make positive contributions to our society and economy? Two experts who know the subject intimately will speak on this topic:

Anuj Gupta, President and CEO, The Welcoming Center, which has helped newcomers to Philadelphia find the resources they need to become contributing members of American society since 2003

Zeke Hernandez, Max and Bernice Garchik Family Presidential Associate Professor at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and author of "The Truth About Immigration: Why Successful Societies Welcone Newcomers"

Doors for this event open at 7 p.m., and the discussion will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Club. Please RSVP so we know how many to expect.
